Ernest Millard Medders*, 1920-1979

Ernest Millard MEDDERS*, WWII was born 111 Nov 1920 in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia. He died 16 Oct 1979 at the VA Hospital in Atlanta, Dekalb County Georgia, He was the second and last child of William Ernest MEDDERS and Sara WILLIAMS.  

Ernest Millard MEDDERS is the great grandson of John Smith "Meadows" MEDDERS, a Confederate Civil War Soldier, who fought at the Battle of Jonesboro, 31 Aug 1864 to 1 Sep 1864, where he was wounded and lost his right arm above the elbow.

Ernest Millard MEDDERS is the great grandnephew of James Riley MEDDERS, a Confederate Civil War Soldier, who fought at the Battle of Nashville/Nashville Station.  

Ernest Millard MEDDERS is the 5th great grandson of Phillip DEEN, and American Revolutionary War Soldier.

Early Life 

Ernest was born in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia and lived there until his parents move to the big city somewhere about 1925. His mother and father gave Ernest Millard MEDDERS namesake; his first name was given of his father’s middle name. His middle name was given of his great grandfather Millard Ralphus Deen. Millard Ralphus Deen’s daughter, Betty Luvicus Deen married William Jasper Medders.  Sometime prior to 1930 Ernest mother and father divorced.

 

Ernest is living on Woodland Avenue in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia on 6April 7th 1930 with his mother and sister Eris. His father is living in the home of Lawrence Eskew as a boarder. Ernest is recorded on (page 10B, Line 58m household #113).

Ernest married Frances (last name unknown) about 1940. Ernest and Frances had one child together, Jerry.

3Ernest M MEDDERS was a WWII Veteran who had served in the Africa Corps. He enlisted in the 7US Army on 22nd September 1942 and served through out the remainder of World War II. His enlistment station was Fort McPherson, Atlanta Georgia. He had contracted malaria while in Africa, but fully recovered before coming home. While Ernest was overseas his wife Frances divorced him.

While E.M. was overseas in Africa he wrote his mother a poem:

"Only one Mother
Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn;
Hundreds of Lambs in the purple clover;
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn;

After returning home from the war, he met and married Mildred Louise Couch-Holtzclaw on 15th November 1946 in Conley, Georgia. Mildred Louise Couch had been previously married to Carl Thomas Holtzclaw. They would have 4 Children together.

After marriage Ernest got his first big break by being hired at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; now known as Lockheed-Martin in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. Lockheed was an aerospace company originally founded in 1912 and then merged with Martin Marietta in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin. They would become the largest Military Aircraft maker in the U.S.A. Ernest M Medders was a Tool and Dye maker for Lockheed. If there was a tool that was needed to build an aircraft he made it. The logo above is circa 1930.

Death-place 5History-Future 

An automobile while crossing Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, struck Ernest M Medders. While attempting to recover from massive injuries (broken bones, punctured lungs) he suffered a Urinal Collapse and died from blood poisoning.
