James Manning Medders*, 1875-1953

1James “Big Jim” Manning MEDDERS was born 4th October 1875 in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia and died 14th June 1953. He was the 6th child of James Riley “Meadows” MEDDERS and Elizabeth ALTMAN*. His father was a Confederate Soldier who fought at the Battle of Nashville/Nashville Station during the US Civil War.

James Manning Medders was the nephew of Johns Smith MEDDERS, a Confederate Soldier who fought and was wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro during the US Civil War.

2James Manning Medders was born in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia and grew up around a large family, he was the 6th of 10 children.

James Manning “Meadows” Medders is living in Taylorton, Appling County, Georgia on 416th June 1880 with his mother and father and siblings. The family household is being recorded under the name of James R. “Meadows” and his father is shown as a farmer.

 James Manning Medders married Ella Agnes CROSBY (1880-1955) in 1899 they had 12 children together with one infant dieing at birth. Ella Agnes Crosby was the daughter of Abraham Andrew Jackson CROSBY (1847-1918) and Catherine HALL (1846-1900).

James M Medders is living in Appling County, Georgia on 51st June 1900 as a farmer with his wife Ella and family. The children living with them at this time are; Maggie May age 9 months. Also living in his household is a boarder by the name of Silas Johnson age 16. James is recorded on (page #88, line 75, household #13) note: James is recorded as having an additional initial of S. (Jas. M. S. Medders).

James Manning Medders is living on Alma and Baxley Road, in Appling County, Georgia on the 63rd May 1910 as a farmer with his wife Ella and family. The children living with them at this time are; Maggie M age 10 - Ossie "Ocie" age 7 - Okella age 6 - Dewey age 4 -Linnie age 2 and Silas age 3months. Oddly enough they have Ella listed as being married twice. This is new to me and may be an error. They are shown as having 7 children with 1 child deceased. James is recorded on (page #15A, line 4, household #240).

James Manning Medders is living on Alma and Baxley Road in Deen, Appling County, Georgia on 718th April 1930 as a farmer with his wife Ella and family. The children living with them at this time are; James D age 24 - Silas J age 18 - Cleetie age 16 - Delilia age 15 - John S age 12 - Oletha M age 9 and Marion L age 7. James is shown as owning real estate (tract unknown) valued at $2000.00. James is recorded on (page #10A, Line 5, household #179).

Marguerite is the granddaughter of James Manning and Ella Agnes Medders.

8In September of 1942 James and Ella would see their son Silas Jackson MEDDERS, be drafted and serve time in the Us Army during World War II.

Death Place
James “Big Jim” Manning Medders died in Appling County, Georgia at the age of 77 on 914th June 1953. His wife Ella would follow him only 2 years later in 1955. "Big Jim" is buried in Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery, Appling County, Georgia.
